As we head into summer and another month, June reminds us of the men in our lives. Whether it's a father, brother, spouse, or lover, it's the perfect time to get him to change it up for the summer. Most men I know are typically creatures of habit. When they find a favorite show, they watch it. When they find a favorite team, they stick with that team until the wheels roll off. It doesn't matter if the team has ever won a championship, men know that it's their team and they remain loyal fans.
In fact, one of my favorite memories of my father is him wearing an old sweater and a fedora hat, watching his favorite football team, the Steelers. No matter how much my mother would say "George, you need to throw that old thing out", my father would grumble and tell her "Toots, leave me and mine alone". Every football season it was the same thing with them for 45 years. He was the same way with his cologne, Brut. To this very day, each time I catch a whiff of Brut, a slight smile of memory crosses my mind because it reminds me of him. My father has been gone for 34 years and my mother is still alive at the age of 97, and guess what? Deep inside a trunk, locked away in storage, she still has that old tatted sweater and fedora hat.
It's memories such as these of my father that prompted me to write this blog. If he were still alive, he'd probably still be wearing Brut, and my mother would probably still be telling him to change. And guess what? He'd probably still tell her "Toots, leave me and mine alone". Of course, I'd buy him a new cologne for Father's Day, and for that one day, he would wear it. Afterall, father's can't resist the pleas of their little girls, no matter how old we get. He would wear the new cologne for one day to please me and probably shut my mother up.
So girls, here's a fin summer scent for you to slip in on your dad. He might just wear it for that one day, but at least he did it for you.
